Life in Menai Boarding House is designed to help girls feel safe, supported and connected while they make the most of their education at Penrhos. It is a place where they learn valuable life skills and develop the confidence to navigate the world beyond school.
Within our caring and structured environment, boarders develop independence, build lifelong friendships and enjoy a rich and balanced school experience. From academic support and wellbeing programs to weekend activities and shared traditions, boarding life offers opportunities for girls to build resilience and self-confidence.
Boarding life at Penrhos
Safety and wellbeing
From the moment a new boarder arrives at Penrhos, she is welcomed into a supportive community where her wellbeing is our priority. Our experienced boarding staff take the time to get to know each student, offering guidance, encouragement and a listening ear as girls settle into their home away from home.
Our boarding team is led by Head of Boarding, Liz Langdon, and supported by dedicated staff who are present day and night. Each evening, staff members remain overnight in the Boarding House to ensure students feel safe and supported at all times, and so they are available to speak with parents whenever needed.

Activities and weekends
Life in the Boarding House extends well beyond the school day. Boarders are encouraged to participate in the many co-curricular opportunities available at Penrhos, including sports such as tennis, hockey, netball, basketball, swimming, athletics, cross country, rowing and volleyball.
Weekends provide time for relaxation, connection and fun. Boarders may spend time enjoying games and activities within the Boarding House, or participating in organised excursions and social events.
Our Recreation Officer coordinates a wide variety of weekend activities, which may include:
- Trips to the movies
- Shopping excursions
- Sporting events
- Ice skating or aquatic centre visits
- Concerts and cultural events
- Ten-pin bowling and social gatherings
Many activities are organised with other boarding schools, including our brother school, Wesley College, giving students opportunities to broaden their friendships and experiences.
Boarders are also encouraged to suggest activities they would like to take part in, ensuring the program reflects the interests of the girls themselves.
A Day in the Life of a Penrhos Boarder
Morning: Boarders begin the day together in the Boarding House before heading to breakfast and preparing for the school day. Living on campus means there is no commute, giving students time to start the day calmly and connected with their friends.
School day: During the day, boarders attend classes alongside day students and take part in the full life of the College – from academic learning to co-curricular activities including sport, music, drama and clubs.
Afternoon: After classes, many boarders participate in co-curricular training sessions, rehearsals or activities before returning to the Boarding House to relax, socialise and enjoy dinner together.
Evening Prep: From Monday to Thursday, boarders follow a structured study routine during Prep time. Younger students study in the Library with supervision, while senior boarders may study independently in their rooms or shared study spaces. On Sunday evenings, allocated study/quiet time allows every boarder to be prepared for the week ahead.
Teachers and tutors are available to provide additional academic support when needed.
Evening wind-down: After study time, girls can relax, connect with friends, call family or enjoy quiet time in their rooms before settling in for the night.
A full breakdown of boarding routines is available in our Boarding Handbook.
“Our girls have become more resilient, independent and confident. Boarding has helped them develop strong study routines, healthy daily habits and skills that will serve them well for life. They're also provided with opportunities and life experiences they simply wouldn't get locally.”
