Joanna Hayter AO (1977)

Joanna has worked in international development and social justice since 1983. 

With experience ranging across four continents and 25 countries, her former roles include: Country Director for the Burnet Institute in Burma; Country Director for Save the Children UK in Vietnam; and Regional Director for Africa with the Overseas Service Bureau (now Australian Volunteers International). Joanna also managed her own consultancy firm for three years. With clients including UN agencies, governments and international NGOs, she provided policy, evaluation and management services in relation to disease control, humanitarian assistance, national strategic planning, organisational development with civil society, and institutional strengthening within government systems. In late 2010 Joanna became the Executive Director of International Women’s Development Agency. 

In 2013 Joanna was named one of Australia’s ‘100 Women of Influence’. In 2016 on International Women’s Day Joanna Hayter was inducted to the Victorian Honour Roll of Women. On Australia Day 2018 Joanna was appointed an Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia Honours List, cited for “distinguished service to women in the areas of gender equality and individual rights through leadership and policy development roles, and to the promotion of global health, peace and security.”.
